2009 Emmy Awards Red Carpet

Before I get to any exciting Emmy Awards Red Carpet talk, I want to acknowledge that I owe you two Project Runway episodes' worth of reviews (although by now you must all be more than up to date). Thanks to the magically nonstop whirlwind that was Fashion Week, instead of watching Tim Gunn & co. I was busy working backstage and then indulging in some much needed sleep (5 hours is never enough). So stay tuned for RedPoppy's PR episode review beginning this thursday night...and don't forget to make it work!

And now back to business. The 61st Annual Emmy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles, and lucky for me I was otherwise occupied with more important things than wasting my life away watching the three hour telecast. Among the night's big winners, and a proud shout-out for established actresses in the industry mind you, was Toni Colette for "United States of Tara," Glenn Close in "Damages," Jessica Lange for "Grey Gardens," the retro "Mad Men," and NBC's "30 Rock." Like most of you, however, I am far more interested in who wore what and why. Here are the beauties who made it onto my Best Dressed List:

Chloe Sevigny in Isaac Mizrahi

Ginnifer Goodwin in Yves Saint Laurent

Rose Byrne in Valentino

Mila Kunis in Monique Lhuillier

Jennifer Carpenter ('Dexter') in Zuhair Murad

Brit Comedian Ricky Gervais looking super in Ted Baker

'The Office's dapper John Krasinski

Gossip Girl Leighton Meester in Bottega Veneta

Kristin Chenoweth in Zuhair Murad

'Mad Men's January Jones in Versace

Holly Hunter- can you believe she's 51??

Redhead Debra Messing in Michael Kors (although the hair needs help)

Kathy Griffin in her signature robotic pose (her hair also needs help)

Here are my picks for elegant and harmless gowns which, nonetheless, would have looked ten times better if only they were a little different:

Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier. Her bodice needs fitting, and that nude/peachy shade is making me nauseous.

Toni Collette in Monique Lhuillier. Pretty dress but something's wrong with the color. Maybe it's the red carpet?

Tina Fey in Gucci. By the way, please stop wearing black. If you looked any more boorish I'd be in a coma...

Sandra Oh in Marchesa. The dress fits like a glove, but the overall gold look does absolutely nothing for me (and I'm hoping you care).

Gossip Girl Blake Lively in Versace. The red shade looks lovely, but she could do without her bazoongas plunging in everyone's face.

Mariska Hargitay in Carolina Herrera. I usually love CH, but this silver lame gown puts me straight to sleep...

And for the Worst red carpet looks of the night:

Padma Lakshmi doing her best impression of Frida Kahlo.

Kyra Sedgwick in L'Wren Scott. Blushing Dutch milkmaid embroidery included.

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Max Azria Maternity.

Heidi Klum in Marchesa. Now, I love pregnant women's shapes, but Heidi looks like she's been squeezed through a tall dark champagne glass and can't get out...

Jeanne Tripplehorn looking like she upchucked gold sequin paillettes all over herself...

Jessica Lange, you are such an accomplished actress, and that is one ugly green dress.

Comedienne Sarah Silverman looking like a good joke.

SNL's Kristen Wiig, I love you, you're so funny and pretty. But why the Spider Woman sleeves? Whyyyyyy?

Christina Applegate in Basil Soda. Maybe it's the name. Maybe because she got her dress from 'Dancing With the Stars' costume department...

Hayden Panettiere in J. Mendel. Two words: Underage. Bordello.
